It was well before 2.4.1, but I started playing around 2.2.5. There is a chance to get Nanite deposits out of Ring Worlds in the L-Cluster; they're not guaranteed, by my understanding.

I can confirm that terraforming, does indeed, get rid of the resource. I did that in my current game not even thinking about it when I noticed my nanite income was 0. Not I’m using 2 and producing 2, but just 0. Check the planets and the resource was gone. You lose the resource permanently.
