I would say that multi-hit is not realistic for blunt weapons (or axes) even with reduced damage per hit. In real life you could do glancing blows to hit multiple targets, but you'd be dealing pretty much 0 damage to one or both targets if you did that. Multi hit is too boring. Combat is all about spacing and timing, and finding the right rythm for these two things. Also, even a few zombies mean quite the threat for a long while untill you level up a weapon skill. With multi hit on, the game turns into a hack and slash borefest, where even larger groups are easy to deal with from the get go.
