I wouldn't recommend act 3 or 5 mercs really. You can equip 1 handed swords on them and shields on the act 3. Consider than an act 5 merc can cast decrepify using a lawbringer. That's about the most useful thing I can imagine them doing. I use delerium on my act 2 merc.
