About the Project. Our goal is to provide more reliable travel times and improve driver safety on US Highway 50 through the Little Blue Creek Canyon, 30 miles east of Montrose and 30 miles west of Gunnison, in Gunnison County, Colorado (from mile points 123 to 127). Funds are being provided by CDOT and the Federal Lands Access Program.A crack in a support beam in the US Highway 50 bridge spanning Blue Mesa Reservoir was identified by an inspection crew on April 18, subsequently closing the highway connecting Gunnison to Montrose. That created a 354-mile detour and 6-8 hours extra travel time for motorists.The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park south rim is accessed just east of Montrose (my personal fave) and the north rim is accessed near Crawford, CO off the CO92 detour. Montrose residents who need to get to Gunnison will travel North to I-70 to reach U.S. Route 24 and then go south using U.S. Route 285 to meet back up with Highway 50. There is no bridge across the canyon. Allow 2 to 3 hours to drive from one rim to the other. The North Rim is 11 miles southwest of Crawford. Re: Hwy 50 construction on road to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As you come in to Montrose from Ouray, you'll be on 550/Townsend Ave. You'll turn right on Main Street and travel east about 7 1/2 miles to your turnoff to the South Rim of the Black Canyon. The construction zone is 30 miles east.
