I mentioned couple weeks ago picking up a 4020 w/powershift at local auction. It was 1 owner but we knew the maint was very poor... Changing all fluids and filters --expecting to see some gremlins pop up. Our issue now is the powershift going forward works great. Reverse, not so much.

Look at the ends of the rocker shaft, are the rubber plugs right against the cotter pins? Had a 4020 that the rubber plugs got hard and moved into the shaft tube and cut off the oil to the shaft. The negative should go to the wire that is connected to ignition switch. Then the other wire is from the sending unit.

If not check wiring, regulator, grounds, terminals, cables or pull generator and have it bench tested.1. The white wire spade was broken off from behind the switch. 2. Checked my wires for voltage with the key off- The blue, and brown are hot 12v's. I have a grey wire that is dim hot with my test light - meter showed 2v's. The rest of the wires were dead with the key off (grn, dbl black, broken white).Remove the screw, install a plastic line on the fitting and start the tractor. Turn the steering wheel to the RH stop position and open the fitting slowly. Let oil bleed out the line until no bubbles are present then tighten the fitting. Be careful as the steering wheel may jump after the bubbles are gone. Recheck the steering.The 24 volt 4020 - is it a positive ground system? Is it the original 24 volt system where it is 12V negative ground from one battery and 12V positive ground from the other battery and is isolated from the chassis? If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. Always runs rough and always stalls out under load.

Its just the poor quality of the batteries mounted under the deck, along with the fact the 24v system is h^ll on batteries and starters.
