I like 11 grains of Unique behind a 500 gr Lee boolit, my crony says 1100+FPS. Great load in my Sharps and my Pedesorli Rem. Roller 45-70's. 13 grains behind any 45-70 boolit in the 300 to 400 gr. range. I love RL7 for all the same reason's Starrbow mentioned, but H4198 is a real good one as well. H322 has a very good following and is very accurate. I really haven't found a bad powder in my 45-70 yet.. Good thing is everything that works in the 45-70, will work excellent with the 444 Marlin you'll eventually have to have! HA! For hotter loads I use 2400 and for much hotter loads I use 4198 or RL7. I am casting my own 405g Boolit's, using a Lee 405 standard base mold! Using Wheel weights and dropping in water as soon as cast! Loading as poured and not sizing!

I use Unique in my 45 Colt handloads. A lot of people post on the internet using Unique for this round, but I wouldn't. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it.
