There are a few bed and breakfasts (Regatta Inn or Waters Edge Inn) and a hotel (The Tides) on Folly Beach that could certainly accommodate you for a couple nights. Traffic should not be bad going to the beach from the Historic District. Bad traffic going out to Folly tends to be over stated. Especially for April it shouldn't be an issue.

Looking for seafood, steaks, barbeque etc. Doesn't really matter just looking for really good. We have decided to stay at the Emeline.Mt. Pleasant is a nice area. Personally, I would recommend venturing ~5-10 minutes further from downtown and staying in one of the beaches. Folly Beach or Sullivans Island being the closest. March is before the high season so prices should be decent, not sure how they compare to Mt. P.
I guess it depends on how you define “gay friendly”. I grew up in Charleston. It is not a place where gay people would have to worry about their safety any more than heterosexuals.
