The recoil was more than a little "snappy", more like "brisk" and exhilarating to say the least. In my Marlin 1895 the same load is pretty "snappy".25. It was my assumption that this is the same powder used in the factory LeverRevolution loads for 44 mag and 45/70 since the names and artwork are the same. Hornady LeverRevolution factory ammo does in fact work quite nicely in my 44 mag and 45/70 guns. With the 300gn Sierra HPFN a charge of 59.5gn of AR2207 gets 2394fps; and 52gn of AR2207 drives the Hornady 325gn FTX at 2242fps. One issue with the 45-70 is that some powders are more position sensitive in this large case when using loads for cast bullets. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it. Pretty good powder for the .45-70 IMHO.
