Drag the wire onto the slot in the fence inventory. Make sure you are on the outside of the gate/fence, with pliers in your hand, you should see the wire on the ground, look at it and do the "attach" option.

Posted November 6, 2020. You need to have a hammer or hatchet equipped to build the fence. The components need to be in the component slots. Then you cycle through the prompts to build the portions of the fence you want. If you build something you don't want equip an axe and you will get prompts to disassemble portions of the fence.
DayZ Tip. Grenades detonated near a fence/gate will damage the frame of the structure, even if they explode on the side the panel is facing. This means it doesn't matter if the panel is made of metal or wood, because both of the frames will become destroyed at the same time. You need to destroy the frame to enter bases, not just the panel.
