542. Posted February 27, 2022. My M that has been switched to 12 volt and electronic ignition several years ago has gotten hard to start and sounds like it's running labored at idle. It will fire and act like it's going to start but then not. A magneto produces greater spark voltage as speed increases. Battery ignition produces greatest spark voltage at slow speeds. IH used lots of Delco electrics on the tractors. Chevrolets of the Cub era also used Delco and a spark plug gap of 0.035. Suggest installing the battery powered "distributor" with points first. I would expect some problems getting the tractor running properly. Get the tractor running. Then if you wish, convert to electronic ignition. 12 volt alternator, cheaper to convert than to repair a 6 volt generator and regulator. I have an excuse.
