Personally, this response from Linus feels like a backhanded apology. It seems like Linus tried to minimize the mistakes by implying that they're a natural result of transparency and downplaying the importance of wrong data. Honestly I feel Linus has handled this much worse than the backpack stuff. I do agree with Steve in the fact that now no matter how Linus responds it can't be trusted because of his "PR" statement.
