Nov 23, 2022 · The VTM 34, SS34, and Phase4 33. The Mathews and Bowtech were the top contenders for me. I walked out with a Phase 4. Never thought I would see the day I bought a Mathews over a Bowtech or Hoyt, but here we are. All three are top notch. For me the Mathews won, however that was a purely personal and subjective choice.
Switched from the Mathews Vertix to a 80lb Hoyt VTM 34. Couldn’t be happier with the balance of the bow, overall speed, and groups so far. Just ordered a quivalizer to try something new this year. Primarily hunt spot and stalk in south central ND.I shot a number of bows and narrowed it down to 3: Hoyt RX-7 Ultra, Bowtech SS34 and Mathews V3X 33. I'd be happy taking anyone of them home. They way I ranked them were: Speed (30.5" draw, 70 lbs, 450 grain arrow): V3X 33, RX-7 Ultra, SS34. Cost (with sales): V3X 33 ($950), SS34 ($1300), RX-7 Ultra ($1400)After crunching the numbers, my VTM 30 had a kinetic energy rating of 82.69 foot pounds, more than enough to blow through any game animal on the planet. I really like the SS34 and Omnia, but the Mathews and Hoyt were just so effortless to hold on target and shoot repeatable shoots for me.
The Mathews was shooting at 307 fps vs 296 from the Hoyt (!). I was so impressed by the draw cycle vs. speed from the Mathews. Then you consider the riser length of the Mathews (33.5" vs. 31" from the Hoyt) and the weight (4.25 lbs. vs. 4.5 lbs. from the Hoyt) and the reflex (1.5" on the Mathews vs. 1.75" on the Hoyt)...

It is light but so is the new Mathews. They claim it’s stronger than carbon and dampens vibration 3X better than 6061 aluminum and 20X more than carbon. 30% lighter than 6061 aluminum as well. Just seems like a hard sale and you’re really limiting your customer base.

The VTM 34 has a true center shot at around 3/4”, in other words the arrow is coming straight out of the bow at that distance. The V Pro 33 was closer to 5/8”. With Mathews, every mod is optimized for your draw length to maximize performance. So I would start there.
I will say the Hoyt's DL felt short on both the 30 and 33 in comparison to the Mathews. I was surprised that the longer ata Hoyt draw cycle wasnt as linear as the 30. It had a small dump into the valley similar to the Mathews. The Hoyt 33 also had just a slight buzz in the palm of my hand and it wasnt as quiet as the 30 or the V3X.
