He is in fact a billionaire - in The New X-Men Volume 1, Fantomex at one point says that Xavier is a billionaire, worth about 3.5 billion dollars.

It just mixes that group of students with the New(-er) Mutants (the one with Surge, Prodigy, etc.), it's not "essential" but it's pretty similar in spirit to the (not so) New Mutants (the one with Dani Moonstar, Warlock, etc.) and Generation X (the Lobdell one) so it's worth reading, I think. Duggan's X-Men - This is basically your traditional X-Men as Superheroes book. They're heroes doing hero things. Meh Books: Hickman's X-Men - It's A LOT of world building. 90% of the book is just planting seeds for later stories. It's painfully ignorable for the most part. Children of the Atom - Read it in one go. Adding way too much stuff eventually caught up with them. It's the Spiderman 3 problem - 4 villains, 0 characterization.
