The only reason to side against the goblins is racial animus. Act 1 allows you to pick one race to destroy, goblins or tieflings. No original characters recruitable, except Jaheira and Minsc. Jaheira is an extremely annoying, mega-woke old witch, who will try to kill you (and die) on an evil playthrough, and is hard to keep alive during Tower siege in a good playthrough. Minsc is literally gated behind Jaheira, if anything happens to her then he is unattainable.

While you can technically make this decision earlier in Baldur’s Gate 3, she’ll initially express a preference for staying with the Harpers. If Nightsong dies, Jaheira is at risk of dying when the Shadow Curse spreads and overpowers Isobel’s barrier. After this is the hardest task, keeping Jaheira alive during the attack on Moonrise Towers.
